Worst 2016-17 season football players eleven

T

he foreign football news website "Goal.com" presents the worst European eleven for the 2016-17 season halfway through. Among the footballers who have not lived up to their expectations, there are three representatives each from the "Premier" league and "La Liga".

Goalkeeper

Loris Karius - the 23-year-old German goalkeeper, acquired by "Liverpool" club in the summer, has not lived up to the expectations placed on him so far. Despite gaining momentum in the season, the German became the main goalkeeper for "Liverpool" in the English "Premier" league matches, but his uncertain goalkeeping led Jurgen Klopp to change his opinion - recently, Simon Mignolet has returned to the field. L. Karius has engaged in a war of words with Gary Neville, but actions, not words, are the most important in football.

Defenders

Javier Mascherano - if last season the Argentine was irreplaceable and reliable as Barcelona's center-back, this season the footballer becomes one of the main problems in the Catalan defense. J. Mascherano played in both right-back and center-back positions this season, but did not shine with reliable performance in either. Samuel Umtiti outperformed J. Mascherano without much competition, and it seems that this season will be the last for him in Barcelona.

John Stones - the center-back of the English national team, who cost "Manchester City" 50 million pounds last summer, does not shine with reliable performance in the "citizens" defense. J. Stones started the season partnering with Nicolas Otamendi, but after a series of failures for "Man City," the Englishman lost Pep Guardiola's trust and spent more time on the bench than on the field in the past month.

Thomas Vermaelen - the Belgian, who did not receive any playing time at "Barcelona" club, wore "Roma" boots on a loan basis this summer. In his debut match, T. Vermaelen received a red card and hampered the Italian team's chances of advancing to the UEFA Champions League. Later, the defender suffered an injury, but returned at the end of November and now enjoys a role as a substitute player.

Midfielders

Renato Sanches - the young Portuguese midfielder, who cost Bayern Munich 35 million euros, has not convinced Carlo Ancelotti with his play so far. In this season, the 19-year-old player played 615 minutes and did not record any goals or assists in his personal statistics. This is just the first season for Portugal abroad, so the adaptation process may take time. Nevertheless, the midfielder has not convinced either the Bayern fans or the team's coach.

Geoffrey Kondogbia - the French defensive midfielder, who has been playing for Inter Milan since 2015, still does not prove his worth in Italy. The former Monaco and Sevilla defensive midfielder has played only nine matches this season and did not gain the coaches' trust at Inter. It seems that in January the midfielder will be loaned to Marseille to regain confidence or get more opportunities on the field.

Andre Gomes - last summer, Barcelona was very active in the transfer market, and the most expensive purchase was the Portuguese player who cost 35 million euros. A. Gomes gained Luis Enrique's trust and played 19 matches this season. Unfortunately, the Barcelona fans are not satisfied with the performance of the midfielder. After the injury of the key Barcelona player Andres Iniesta, the Portuguese player could not handle his tasks, and "Barca" fell into a hole.

Wayne Rooney - the long-time Manchester United player and captain, who has been moved from one position to another for the past three seasons. In Jose Mourinho's team this season, W. Rooney started playing in the attacking midfielder position, but now the Englishman can be seen playing on the left-wing of the attack. W. Rooney had a particularly difficult start to the season, and the "Red Devils" fans have already talked about the possibility of the player, who plays as a forward and midfielder, moving to the MLS.

Forwards

Gabigol - the Brazilian, who is considered the new Neymar, is having a tough time in his first season in Europe. The 20-year-old player played only 20 minutes for the fashion capital's team this season. It is possible to say that the Brazilian does not get a chance on the field, so he does not demonstrate good play, but the Inter coaching staff does not see that Gabigol could be useful to the team at the moment. There is a high probability that the Brazilian will be loaned to a slightly weaker European team in January.

Jese - the former Real Madrid player decided to leave the Spanish capital this summer and try to revive his career in Paris Saint-Germain. However, the 23-year-old forward is only given a chance to show himself at the end of matches by PSG strategist Unai Emery or in less important tournaments. This season, the Spanish player played 14 matches in the ranks of the French champions and scored two goals. According to reports, Jese wants to be loaned to Las Palmas in January.

Paco Alcacer - the Spaniard, who cost Barcelona 30 million euros last summer, faces tough competition in the forward position in the Catalan team, where Luis Suarez plays. P. Alcacer occasionally gets a chance to appear on the field, but it took the 23-year-old player a long time to score his first goal - just last week, Alcacer managed to score his first official goal for Barcelona in the King's Cup. Paco was purchased as a player who could rise from the bench at important moments and help the team score goals, but the young Spaniard has not yet shown such play.
