T

he coach of Lithuanian champion Vilnius "Žalgiris", Marekas Zubas, will lead his players to the first training session of this year on Monday, January 6.

Since then, "Žalgiris" will begin preparing for the official season starting in early March.

The Portuguese media spread the news that the Vilnius club is interested in attacking midfielder Miguel António Teixeira Ferreira Pedro, or simply Miguel Pedro, who is coached by former Lithuanian national team coach José Couceiro at Setubal's "Vitoria" team. "Vitoria" currently occupies the eleventh place in the Portuguese league.

Mindaugas Nikoličius, the sports director of the Vilnius Football Association "Žalgiris", confirmed that the information from Portuguese journalists was not made up.

"But "Žalgiris" is interested not only in this footballer. We have been involved in selection work throughout the year. Miguel Pedro is just one of those options. He is, of course, a player who would definitely strengthen "Žalgiris", - said the sports director.

M. Pedro has a contract with "Vitoria" until the summer of 2014.

"We hope to make several big transfers, we want to assemble a team that would have the potential to perform well in Europe, so we are aiming at players of a higher level. But the higher level player, the harder it is to persuade them to come to Lithuania and play against Tauragė or Pakruojis. After all, they will have to play not only in the Champions League," said M. Nikoličius.

Now 30-year-old M. Pedro was born in Porto and began his football career in 2002 at the club "Salgueiros" in the city, playing in the second league of Portugal, before moving to the "Aves" club in the same league.

In 2006, this player moved to the top league team "Académica Coimbra" and started his career as a legionnaire in 2010. He played for the teams "Ermis" and "Anorthosis" in Cyprus, and returned to Portugal in 2012 to join the "Vitoria" club.
